An increasing number of Hairdressers and Barbers now work on a freelance or mobile basis within care homes, residential settings, and supported living environments. This is a highly valued and important service. For many residents, a regular hair appointment plays a significant role in maintaining their wellbeing, confidence, and personal dignity.
However, working within a care environment introduces additional risks and responsibilities that differ from those encountered in salons or standard freelance settings. It is essential that professionals working in these environments clearly understand the boundaries of their role and the limits of their insurance cover.
*This guidance note outlines the principal considerations of which all members should be aware.
Your role as a visiting Stylist
When working in a care home or residential setting as a freelance stylist, your role is to provide hairdressing or barbering services only, in line with your training, professional registration, and insurance cover.
Your role does not extend to:
- Providing care or supervision of residents
- Escorting residents within the premises
- Assisting with mobility or physical handling
This applies even in informal situations or where such assistance is requested by care home staff. Care home staff are professionally trained to carry out all of the above for their residents. You are not trained, registered, or insured to undertake these duties.
The Insurance Position
FHA public liability insurance for hairdressers and barbers is designed to cover risks directly associated with the provision of hairdressing services. It does not cover liability arising from:
- Moving or escorting residents
- Providing physical assistance
- Taking responsibility for vulnerable individuals outside of your professional remit
If a resident were to sustain an injury, experience a fall, or suffer a medical episode while under your supervision—for example, while being collected from their room—you may be personally liable. In such circumstances, FHA insurance would not provide cover, exposing you to significant financial and legal risk.
Additional Guidance
Members should be aware that FHA insurance does not extend beyond hairdressing activities.
Understanding these boundaries is essential to protecting both yourself and the residents you serve.
